Astrology can tell us many, many things about ourselves, but one of my favorite things to take note of in an astrology chart is the fact that our rising signs can dictate how we look. Now, don’t worry your pretty little butt off, I know that genetics is ultimately going to play the biggest role in determining what someone looks like, but you’d be surprised about how spot on this area of astrology is.
Your rising sign is the sign that rules your first house. This is where the sun was rising on the horizon from the vantage point of where on earth you were born. For instance, if you are an Aquarius sun and an Aquarius rising then you were born at sun rise; if your sun and rising are the same that is what that means! If you’re an Aquarius sun and Pisces rising you were born after sunrise, and if your rising is Capricorn you were born just before sunrise. The rising sign changes every 2 hours and shows us where the sun is in relation to where we are on earth.

Our rising sign also tells us where our house system begins in our chart. There are 12 houses in every chart, each of the houses dictating a different area of our lives. The 1st house begins at the ascendant, AKA the rising sign, and the 12 houses fall in line after. The area of life that the 1st house dictates is the way we view the world and ourselves, it’s the most defining characteristic of our personality, and it also rules over the body which is why we tend to look like our rising signs.

Aries
Aries rules over the head in medical astrology, so Aries people tend to be a bit accident prone. I don’t know any Aries who hasn’t had a concussion at least once in their life, because of this it is quite common to meet Aries risings with a face scar. Even aside from their daredevil ways, it’s hard to meet an Aries rising who doesn’t have a prominent mole or birthmark on their face.
Taurus
As an earth sign, Taurus risings tend to be pretty physically inflexible from the jump, but they can certainly work to create more flexibility throughout their life. Since Taurus rules over the neck and throat their neck tends to be a prominent feature, either having an elongated neck or one that is shorter than the norm. And they often have beautiful singing and speaking voices because of this as well!
Gemini
Gemini rules over the hands and arms, so these tend to be the focal points on their bodies. Many Gemini risings work with their hands creating art, playing instruments or quickly typing on a keyboard. Their hands are usually beautiful, interesting and useful. When it comes to their arms they tend to be longer than average, all the better for all the animated storytelling they do!
Cancer
While this isn’t true for all Cancer risings it certainly is common for them to be well endowed in the chest area since Cancer rules over this part of the body. Of course, not everyone grows boobs, but even cis men will often have larger breasts or pec muscles than their peers. Cancer risings also tend to be on the shorter side height wise no matter where you fall on the gender spectrum.
Leo
Leo is the lion, so every Leo rising has a special relationship to their mane. Whether it’s super long, big and curly, always dyed, never dyed, never cut, or anything in between, a Leo rising is as free as their hair. Leo rules over the heart which shows up in different ways for Leo risings, however a chest tattoo looks especially bad ass on them. And don’t get me started on Leo fashion sense--it knows no limits!
Virgo
Virgos tend to have an angelic or cherubic face, the kind that makes people think you’re gullible and not as smart as you actually are (oh how you are underestimated, my friend). Big doe eyes are very common for this rising sign, which adds to your youthful look. It is also common for people to be born as natural blondes, but even more so you’ll find Virgo risings are drawn towards dying their hair blonde or a lighter color than their natural hair. And, I’m just gonna throw it out there, Virgo risings are low key style icons!
Libra
Libra risings tend to have back and face dimples, this is because Libra rules the lower back and it is the sign that represents balance. Now, in my own research I’ve found that people who are Libra risings will either have a perfectly symmetrical face or quite the opposite. There is usually very little middle ground here. That being said, all Libra risings are, like, really pretty and so cute and very fashionable so, uneven face be damned!
Scorpio
Scorpio is traditionally ruled by Mars but its modern ruler is Pluto, so Scorpio risings will usually be natural red heads or have very dark brown/black hair. Even those of you born with a more blonde or light brown shade more often than not will rock red or black hair for a large portion of your life. Scorpio risings also tend to have the kind of eyes that can pierce your soul, you can get lost in their steely gaze.
Sagittarius
Sagittarius rules over the butt, thighs and upper legs, so it’s very common to be able to spot a Sagittarius rising from their beautiful shapely legs. Some Sag risings are thicc and some are thin and muscular, but what unites them is that their legs are a focal point. Dancing, running and short skirts tend to call to these rising signs because if you got great legs you should put them to good use!
Capricorn
Capricorn risings are truly God’s favorite because Capricorn rules over the skin, teeth and nails. What this means is that you tend to have flawless skin, long natural nails and perfect teeth. Now, of course everything happens on a spectrum so sometimes Capricorn risings will struggle particularly with their skin and teeth. The good news is that Capricorns age backwards so they become more beautiful as time goes on. And wrinkles? Never heard of them!
Aquarius
Aquarius risings tend to have pretty androgynous features, neither particularly feminine nor masculine. Aquarius is often thought of as the alien of the zodiac, so these rising signs tend to have an otherworldly look about them as well. You can always spot them in a crowd because they tend to have dyed hair, pierced faces and tattoos all over their body. When it comes to fashion they don’t like to stick to the trends and instead think out the box with clothes that can double as conversation starters.
Pisces
Pisces rules over the feet, so it could be true that Pisces rising people have beautiful feet but since that’s a kind of beauty that is quite relative I like to focus on their eyes. Pisces risings tend to have big eyes that see and take in a lot of information. Their eyes can sometimes be so big that they are sanpaku, meaning that the iris doesn’t touch either the top or bottom lid of the eye (it’s more common to see the iris not touch the bottom lid).
